主 人 公 D o t t y は 、 愛 す る 夫 H a m e l に 従 順 で 7 年 間 も 外 出 し て い な か っ た が そ

れ を 幸 せ と 感 じ て い た 。 し か し あ る 日 、 彼 に 浮 気 の 疑 い が か か る 様 々 な 出 来

事 が 起 こ る 。 そ れ で も 現 実 を 見 よ う と し て い な か っ た D o t t y だ が 、 D a n と い

う 不 思 議 な 存 在 に よ っ て 、 浮 気 現 場 を 直 視 し て し ま う 。 そ の 後 初 め て 自 ら の

意 思 で 外 に 出 て 、 浮 気 相 手 で あ る Z e n a の 美 容 院 に 足 を 運 ぶ も の の 、 偶 然 ア シス タ ン ト と し て 雇 わ れ る な ど 、 刺 教 的 な 毎 日 を 過 ご す よ う に な る 。 美 貌 で ある Z e n a に 影 響 さ れ た D o t t y は 、

「 理 想 の 女 性 」 に な れ ば H a m e l を 取 り 戻 せる と 言 じ て 美 を 追 い 求 め る よ う に な る 。 H a m e l に 縛 ら れ て い た D o t t y が 外 の世 界 に 触 れ る こ と で 、 彼 女 は ど う な る の か 。

本 日 は 第 8 8 回 四 大 学 英 語 劇 大 会 に お 越 し い た だ き あ り が と う ご ざ い ま す 。 W a s e d a P r o d u c t i o n ' 2 5 S t a g e M a n a g e r です。 本 日 は お 忙 し い 中 、 我 々 W a s e d a P r o d u c t i o n の 公 演 に お 越 し い た だ き 、 あ り が と う ご ざ い ま す 。

さ て 、 皆 様 に は 自 分 に と っ て 「 誇 ら し く 思 え る 」 も の は あ り ま す で し ょ う か 。

そ れ は 私 に と っ て 、 大 学 3 年 間 を 賭 し た こ の 活 動 で あ り 、 仲 間 と 過 ご し た 時 間 で あ り 、 共 に 駆 け 抜 け た 仲 間 で あ り 、 そ して そ の 舞 台 と な っ た こ の W a s e d a P r o d u c t i o n そ の も の に な り ま す 。

そ し て 、 こ の 活 動 を 通 じ て P r o d u c t i o n 全 員 に そ の よ う に感 じ て 欲 し い と 思 い 、「 自 分 、 仲 間 、 歩 ん で き た 過 程 、 結 果 と し た 打 ち 出 し た 一 本 の 劇 に 全 員 が 誇 り を 感 じ る た め に 」 とい う V i s i o n を 掲 げ て 今 ま で 歩 ん で き ま し た 。

我 々 W a s e d a P r o d u c t i o n は 、 共 に 歩 ん で き た 仲 間 、 そ の 仲 間 と 創 り 上 げ る O u t o f S t e r n o と い う 作 品 に 愛 と こ だ わ り を 持ち 、 本 公 演 ま で 進 ん で き ま し た 。

何 度 も 何 度 も 困 難 に 巡 り 合 い ま し た 。 当 た り 前 で す が 、一 人 で は 成 り 立 た な い 活 動 で す 。

一 人 で は 乗 り 越 え ら れ な い 壁 は幾 度 と な く あ り ま し た 。 で す が そ の 度 に 仲 間 と 、 こ の P r o d u c t i o n 員 と 乗 り 越 え て き ま し た 。

私 た ち の 幾 度 と な い 挫 折 、 困 難 、 そ の 度 に 強 ま っ た 結 束 、 誇 り 、 愛 。 そ の 全 て が 詰 ま っ た 、 本 当 に 誇 ら し い 我 が 子 の よ うな 作 品 で す 。 私 達 の O u t o f S t e r n o 。 そ の 一 瞬 一 瞬 を 見 逃 さ ず 、 そ の 全 て を ど う ぞ お 楽 し み く だ さ い 。

本 日 は ご 来 場 い た だ き ま し て 誠 に あ り が と う ご ざ い ま す 。 そ し て 、 私 た ち の 作 品 に 関 わ っ て く だ さ っ た 全 て の 皆 様 に 、 こ の 場を 借 り て 深 く 御 礼 を 申 し 上 げ ま す 。

私 自 身 、 演 劇 に 心 を 動 か さ れ た 経 験 か ら 、 自 分 の 作 品 を 通 し て お 客 様 の 心 に 何 か を 動 か し 、 心 に 何 か 確 か な も の を 残 し た いと い う 想 い を 抱 き 、 作 品 づ く り に 励 ん で 参 り ま し た 。 そ ん な 私 と 、 総 勢 1 5 0 名 の 早 稲 田 P r o d u c t i o n の 熱 い 想 い が こ も っ た ” O u t o f S t e rno ” を 、 本 日 皆 様 に お 届 け で き る こ と を 、 心 よ り 幸 せ に 感 じ て お り ま す 。

こ の 一 年 間 、 私 は こ の 本 と 真 摯 に 向 き 合 い 続 け る 中 で 、一 つ 疑 問 を 抱 き ま し た 。

情 報 や 選 択 肢 に 溢 れ 、「 器 用 さ 」 が 強 く 求 め ら れ る 現 代 社 会 。

一 つ の 物 事 に た だ 愚 直 に エ ネ ル ギ ー を 注 ぐ 生 き 方 は 、 周 り から 見 れ ば 不 器 用 な だ け な の か も し れ ま せ ん 。 し か し 本 当 に そ の 「 器 用 さ 」 こ そ が 正 解 な の で し ょ う か 。 私 た ち は 、 そ の 過 程で 、 心 の 奥 底 に あ る 大 切 な 何 か を 、 置 き 去 り に し て い な い で し ょ う か 。

ま だ 大 人 に な り き れ て い な い 未 熟 な 私 た ち 大 学 生 だ か ら こ そ 、 そ し て ア マ チ ュ ア と し て 劇 作 り に 挑 む か ら こ そ 、 こ の " O u t o f S t e r n o ® が 示 す 一 途 な ま で の 真 楽 さ を 、 最 も 純 粋 な 言 葉 で 観 客 の 皆 様 に お 届 け で き る と 強 く 信 じ て お り ま す 。

こ の 公 演 が 、 皆 様 の 心 に 静 か で 確 か な 熱 を 残 す こ と が で き た な ら 、 演 出 家 と し て 、 そ し て 早 稲 田 P r o d u c t i o n に と っ て 、 こ れ に勝 る 喜 び は ご ざ い ま せ ん 。ど う ぞ 最 後 ま で 、 ご ゆ っ く り と 作 品 の 世 界 を お 楽 し み く だ さ い 。

■About Acting

And from the production, "Out of Sterno" by Waseda, I would like to mention the character, Dotty, for her grounded presence and emotional honesty in that performance. And also from the same production, I would like to mention Dan, Sakura Soga, for multiple and clear characterization throughout the performance. 

■About English

And then, we moved on to Waseda for "Sterno", "Out of Sterno". so we really appreciated Dotty, we really appreciated the listening skills because English is... Yes, it's speaking English, but it's also listening. Listening, responding, pausing, and letting the words breathe. And we felt that Dotty had a great command of that as Tina has mentioned. I think acting and English go together. And then, also Dan, just because there were many different characters. So, not only do you have the challenge of doing

■About Stage Effect

"Out of Sterno", just super creative. Really, really creative. The clock we loved. The bus was super cool. Such a good idea with the lights. And the final backdrop of the of the moon with the city, and as the city opened up to the character, it also opened to the audience. So, it's really beautiful. 

■About Directing

"WTF" is directing. What is it? That is something I'm still struggling with.

But, in the words of a famous Canadian judge, you know it when you see it. He wasn't talking about directing though. I won't tell you what he was talking about. Yeah, you know, when you see it, it's like, it's like when we were watching "Silent Sky" and there's that moment with the three women on stage working at the stations and just having allowing space for that moment to live and giving us like a, just a moment, there's no dialogue, but there's stuff happening. That's an example. or the choices in "Brighton Beach Memoirs" to see multiple things happening at once even if they weren't necessarily the focus of the scene, there's dialogue happening, and there's other things happening. Quite a bit of reading. The girls read a lot of books in that show, naturally? And yeah, "A Doll's House", the moment, Krogstad leaves for the last time and he's on the porch, and we see him outside for just a moment. Maybe that's directing. And in "Out of Sterno", where we saw actors who were in the scene with each other and listening to each other. That's, that's directing. Also, the use of talented extras. Who are the extras in that show? Can I see you guys? Because I didn't get to see your names. Nice job. So, yeah, I'm, I feel really honored to be here. This is when I get to do it. It's a highlight of my year. I get to see four great shows. But I still haven't answered the question, "what is directing?" All I've said is I've given you some examples, but it's as the people who directed this year know, it's a little bit of everything. And, but I think the most important thing that the director needs to do is to find the thesis of the play. Sorry, I stole that from you, Jon (Reimer). You said that earlier. I don't have an original thought in my head. Uh, finding the thesis of the play is the most important thing you can do as the director and then making sure the show, everything that happens in the show supports that thesis. So, for future directors in the audience, think about that, these, think about the thesis. Think about serving your central idea. And all of you, I know this is like you're doing this in university, it's just a few years, but I encourage you to keep making art, because it matters. This year, your theme was "transcend", and I really saw all four productions achieve that theme. In "Out of Sterno", Dotty transcends beyond her understanding of herself and her life to become an independent woman and mother.
